LSU Academic Center for Student-Athletes

Freshman Year Experience

The success of a first year for any college student is crucial to the success of their college career. Though for a student-athlete, there is little time to get acclimated due to classes, work-outs, practice schedules and competition. To help make the transition a little easier and more productive, the CCACSA concentrates a great deal of time on each freshmen year experience.

There are 2 orientations that new student-athletes will attend. The first is the University Orientation. Once you have been admitted to LSU you will received information about the orientation and how to sign up for one of the several sessions that go on throughout the summer. This program basically covers information about the University, housing, meal plans, other available resources as well as administers placement exams and gives you the opportunity to meet the college advisors in the major you chose to pursue. The other orientation is our New Student-Athlete Orientation through this office and this gives new student-athletes the opportunity to learn more about our programs and services, the University’s Academic Integrity Policy as well as the eligibility requirements they must meet each year to compete.

To ensure that you start off on the right foot our advisors will be very hands on that first year. First of all, we will make sure that you are taking those courses that go toward your desired major. The advising process is a collaborative effort between you and your sport advisor because we want you to have a clear understanding of the required courses and other academic requirements for your major. With that being said, student-athletes have priority registration which means you get to pick courses before the regular student population. This allows us to help you put together a balance schedule that works with your team practice times and competition.
New student-athletes are required to meet with their sport advisor on a weekly basis so that we know how you are transitioning academically, socially and athletically. This allows us to identify any concerns and to make sure we are providing the necessary assistance you need to be a successful LSU student-athlete.

Strategy Tutors, Tutors and Study Hall
All freshmen are required to attend study hall for 8 hours each week regardless of GPA. Each student is an assigned a strategy tutor to assist with a smooth transition by helping with study skills, goal setting and time management. At the start of each semester, the strategy tutors will collect syllabi for each class and compile a calendar with due dates and scheduled tests for each student. There is also tutor support available for each student in every class subject taken. You may meet with subject specific tutors as requested by you or recommended by your sport adviser.
Advisors meet with coaches on a regular basis to discuss the academic successes and needs of their athletes. Grade reports are sent four times a semester to professors to make sure each student remains on top of his/her coursework. Each student receives customized academic support based on his/her individual needs. Students are still monitored after their freshmen year, but they take on more responsibilities for themselves in order to prepare them for life after college.
