The Practicum Experience
Practicums within the Academic Center for Student-Athletes involves field experiences that allow a student to observe and document how professionals within the center perform their individual job responsibilities. Students will participate in performing tasks under supervision by program supervisors and on-site staff. Concurrently, students will be enrolled in a course which outlines the expectations and requirements of the practicum.
The Internship Experience
As compared to practicums, internships take on the characteristics of a real job focusing on independent application of skills and knowledge within the Academic Center for Student-Athletes. Students are placed with on-site supervisors who manage their workload and oversee their performance much as an administrator in an actual employment setting would. Internships may also be completed for course credit in applicable courses.
Opportunities for Practicum & Internship Students
Academic Affairs
Assist student-athletes in completing their undergraduate and graduate degrees in a timely manner while developing the life skills necessary for their future endeavors. Student-athletes are assigned an advisor who will assist them in major selection, course scheduling, and academic support. Advisors ensure student-athletes are on track for graduation and are in compliance with both LSU’s progress toward degree guidelines and the NCAA’s continuing eligibility rules.
Student Affairs Program
The Student Affairs Program was created by the NCAA foundation in 1991 in an effort to support and enhance the total student-athlete development within a university environment. The total student-athlete development components are comprised of a commitment to academics, personal development, service, career development, and athletics. The Academic Center for Student-Athletes supports and provides resources to a commitment to Academic Excellence, Personal Development, the Community, and Career Development.
Educational Support Services Program
Educational Support Services plays such a big role within our academic services. The primary goal of the program is to provide student-athletes with academic assistance beyond what they receive in the classroom. We offer Learning Specialist, Math Specialists, Reading Specialists, and Tutorial Support to our student-athlete population as they work to build upon their academic foundation.
